The family of a Greenfield man attending graduate school at the University of Colorado is making an online plea to bring him home for a proper funeral after police said he was fatally stabbed early Saturday following an altercation with a fellow student.

Sean Hudson, 26, was found with multiple stab wounds shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Broadway and Walnut streets in Boulder, Colo., according to the Boulder Police Department.

The suspect, 22-year-old Ian Scheuermann, was arrested without incident shortly after the stabbing on suspicion of murder. Jail records indicate he is being held without bond and is slated to appear in court for an initial hearing Monday afternoon.

Police said the stabbing followed an argument that “escalated into violence.” Investigators said Hudson and Scheuermann had mutual acquaintances, and they are still working to determine a motive.

In the wake of the stabbing, a GoFundMe page was established by Hudson’s step-sister Kathy Parraga to generate the funds needed to bring Hudson back home to Greenfield for a funeral service.

As of early Sunday afternoon, the page had made more than $10,500 on the way to its $20,000 goal.

“Sean was an amazing son, brother, friend, student, and just an all around great person,” Parraga wrote in an online update. “He was truly a one of a kind person who impacted so many lives.”

Hudson was a Greenfield High School graduate who attended Butler University on academic scholarship.

After graduating from Butler in 2012 with bachelor’s degree in psychology, as well as minors in biology and classical studies, he went to the University of Colorado where he earned his master’s degree in psychology in 2015.

According to his University of Colorado profile, he was working towards his doctorate degree.

“On behalf of the entire CU-Boulder community, I want to express my condolences to the family and friends of the victim of this senseless act of violence,” University of Colorado Philip P. DiStefano said in a statement. “I also call on our entire campus community to reject violence – unilaterally – as a way of resolving disputes.

“As we have seen in recent months here in Colorado and around the world, it stamps out our individual hopes, dreams and aspirations.”
